The Problem
A homeowner in Inglewood contacted Swan’s Professional Plumbing after an outside gully drain became blocked and stopped draining properly.
Gully drains help carry wastewater away from the property, so when one becomes blocked, water can quickly begin pooling around the drain instead of flowing through the system as it should.
In this case, the blockage was localised to the gully itself, making it a much simpler job than a blockage located deeper within the underground drainage system.
Our Solution
After inspecting the gully, we determined that specialist drain machinery was not required.
Instead, we used a purpose-built gully plunger to work the blockage loose by hand. After repeatedly plunging the drain, the obstruction began to break apart and the backed-up water started flowing normally again.
Because the blockage was accessible and close to the surface, there was no need to use a drain machine, CCTV drain camera or other specialist equipment.
The job took just under an hour on site from inspection through to clearing and testing the drain.
The Result
The blockage was completely cleared and the gully returned to normal operation, with water draining freely again.
The total cost of the job was $438.90 per our current price guide and covered our most experienced plumber’s 1 hour of labour on site.
This is a good example of a straightforward blocked drain call-out. Because the blockage could be reached and cleared manually using the right tool, there was no need for additional equipment, excavation or extended labour.

Simple blockages that are close to an accessible drain opening can sometimes be cleared manually in a relatively short visit. More complex blockages may require professional drain machines, CCTV inspections, additional access points or excavation.
