The answer to this question depends on the severity of the blocked drain. If there is an obvious cause of the blockage, we’ll likely be able to unblock the drain in under an hour. However, if it’s more difficult to detect, or there is a drainage problem, it might take slightly longer.

Often with blocked drains, there’s not one root cause. The cause is dependent on the type of drain that’s blocked. For example, your blocked sink may be a result of too much oil. Often a common cause of blocked shower drains is hair. Other common causes of blocked drains that we see in both residential and commercial properties include foreign objects such as kid’s toys, toiletries such as baby wipes, trees, leaves, debris, and more!

In some cases, you may find a blocked drain will unblock itself over time. However, this is rare. Blocked drains can cause serious problems down the track if left unresolved. Therefore, as soon as you notice the signs of a blocked drain, it’s important you get it looked at.

In some cases, you may be able to unblock the drain yourself. Here are some tips.

  1. Try pouring boiling hot water into your drains to try to melt the substances causing your blockage.
  2. Use a plunger on the blocked drain.
  3. Create a makeshift drain snake to dry and remove blockages that are too deep in your drains.
  4. Pour bi-carb soda and vinegar down the drain to try to unblock the drain.
