The Problem
A homeowner in Kensington contacted us after experiencing a blocked main sewer drain. Upon CCTV camera inspection, we found the inspection shaft completely blocked and overflowing, indicating the obstruction was preventing wastewater from flowing to the sewer.
Our Solution
To restore the drain, we used a high-pressure water jetter to break through and clear the blockage. Once the line was flowing again, we carried out a CCTV drain inspection to identify the underlying cause of the issue.
The camera footage confirmed that tree roots had penetrated the drain through a damaged section of pipe. Using a specialised root-cutting attachment, we removed as much of the root intrusion as possible to restore normal flow.
The CCTV inspection was a critical part of the process. While clearing the blockage provides an immediate solution, the camera allows us to accurately diagnose why the blockage occurred in the first place. Without inspecting the pipework, it would be impossible to determine the extent of the damage or recommend the most appropriate long-term repair.
The Result
The drain was successfully cleared, restoring normal wastewater flow and preventing further overflow. The entire job was completed in approximately 1.5 hours at a cost of $801.90.
As expected with root intrusions caused by a damaged pipe, a small amount of root material remained within the line. While this did not prevent the drain from operating correctly, it indicated that the pipe itself had been compromised.
To provide a permanent solution, we recommended drain excavation to replace the damaged section of pipe and supplied a separate quotation for these repair works.

Tree roots naturally seek out moisture and can enter drains through cracked pipes or failed joints. While high-pressure jetting and root cutting are highly effective at restoring flow, they cannot repair the damaged pipe that allowed the roots to enter.
