Considerations When Upgrading Your Shower

A like-for-like shower head replacement is usually straightforward. More complex upgrades may require a few additional checks before installation. Chat to our plumbers about the following considerations before purchasing new shower fixtures:

Water Pressure and Hot Water System Capacity

Rain showers and multi-function systems may require greater water pressure, flow and hot water system capacity. Our plumbers will check your pipework, hot water system and product specifications to confirm compatibility.

slow draining sink

Waterproofing and Drainage

Removing tiles, changing the shower base or creating new wall penetrations may require additional waterproofing and drainage work. Remember to include these costs in your budget.

Existing Shower Layout

Choosing a shower that matches your existing outlets, connections and fixing points may reduce plumbing alterations and tile repairs. We can verify measurements before installation.

Existing Leaks

If you’re wanting to upgrade a leaking shower, a plumber should identify the cause of the leak before installing new fixtures. Covering a leak with a new fitting might not be the solution and could even allow further damage to develop. Our plumbers can inspect the area and recommend the right repairs before completing the upgrade.

Do I Need to Hire a Licensed Plumber to Install Your New Shower Fixture?

Since February 2024, WA homeowners have been permitted to swap a like-for-like shower head themselves under the new changes to the Plumbers Licensing and Standards Regulations. But that’s where DIY ends.

Anything beyond a direct swap, such as ceiling-mounted rain shower head installation, relocating a shower arm, adding a dual outlet or altering your pipework, still legally requires a licensed plumber. Getting it wrong can cause leaks behind walls, mould growth, structural damage and voided manufacturer warranties.

There’s also a compliance angle to consider. All shower fixtures installed in WA must carry WaterMark Certification and a WELS rating. Fitting non-compliant products is illegal, full stop. Our team supplies and installs only certified fixtures, and we provide a Certificate of Compliance where required under AS/NZS 3500, which is essentially the rulebook for safe plumbing in Australia.

FAQ

In Western Australia, homeowners and occupants are permitted to repair or replace a shower head. This generally applies to a straightforward like-for-like replacement that does not involve altering the pipework, mixer, taps or wall connections. A licensed plumber must complete more complex plumbing work or switch to a new type of shower fitting.

Yes, you can choose a new shower yourself, or we can recommend one best suited to your current set-up

To save on additional installation costs, it’s best to choose a new shower fixture that aligns with your existing plumbing. Many modern rail showers feature adjustable mounting brackets, which allow them to fit existing fixing points and reduce the need for new holes or tile repairs.

If you would like to change the style, position or mounting type of your shower, additional plumbing, waterproofing or tiling work may be required.

Yes, most showers can be upgraded to rain showers, but installation requirements will depend on your existing plumbing. A wall-mounted rain shower that aligns with the current water outlet is usually the simplest and most affordable option.

However, standard rail showers with a separate water inlet are often positioned to one side. Changing to a centred rain shower or a different mounting style may require the pipework to be relocated behind the wall, along with possible tile and waterproofing repairs.

Yes, the simplest option is usually a twin shower system that combines an overhead shower with a hand-held shower using the existing water outlet.

Adding a completely separate shower head may require new pipework, a diverter and a water inlet. Our plumbers will assess your existing plumbing to confirm whether both shower heads will operate effectively and what alterations are required.

Yes, shower fittings are available in finishes such as chrome, matte black, brushed nickel, brushed brass and gunmetal.

For the closest colour match, choose the shower head, rail, arm and mixer from the same manufacturer and product range. Finishes can vary between brands, even when they have the same name.

If you are only replacing the shower head or rail, the change may be straightforward. Replacing the wall mixer or altering concealed plumbing may require additional plumber work.
