Save energy with a heat pump hot water heater

Heat pump water heaters are a type of electric hot water system that offers many consumer advantages, you practically need a score sheet to keep tabs.

This is the water heater of choice for more and more energy-conscious homeowners. At three times the energy efficiency of an electric water heater, it will make a significant dent in your utility costs and dramatically shrink your carbon footprint.

Heat pump water heaters are also called “Hybrid” systems. That’s because they heat your water in two ways. First, by drawing in the ambient warm air around it. When the temperature dips below 10 degrees Celsius during the winter, electrical power takes over to supply your family with the hot water you need until outdoor temperatures warm up again.

How do heat pump water heaters work?

Heat pump water heaters work by using electricity to move heat from one place to another. Heat pumps use a refrigerant cycle to move heat. The refrigerant is compressed and then enters a condenser, where it releases heat. The refrigerant then goes into an evaporator, where it takes in heat from the water that is being heated. This heated refrigerant then goes into the compressor, where the process starts over again. The process is very similar to how a split system air conditioner works.

Reasons to install a heat pump system

  • A heat pump water heater produces 3-5 times the amount of renewable energy than the electricity sometimes required to assist in heating your water.
  • Easier to install than a solar water heater…more affordable, too.
  • Just like a solar water heater, your purchase entitles you to STCs (small technology certificates) which can significantly lower your purchase price.

Heat pump hot water system maintenance & repairs

Whilst heat pump water heaters are known for their longevity, regular maintenance is key to ensure you get the most out of it. Depending on the amount of use you get out of your heat pump, we recommend a licensed plumber take a look at it at least every 5 years.

Things you can do yourself in the meantime include:
  • Flushing the water heater
  • Cleaning the filters
  • Keeping the unit clean
  • Checking the TPR valves

The types of heat pump systems

There are a few different types of heat pumps available on the market, which can make it quite confusing when trying to choose the right one for you! The main two types are single units (otherwise known as integrated systems) and split-systems. Both are energy efficient however, there are some small differences you should be aware of.

Split-system heat pump hot water systems

As the name suggests, split-systems have two separate units. The benefit of splitting the tank and the compressor is you can have a larger compressor that can heat water much faster than a smaller integrated system compressor.

Integrated heat pump hot water systems

In an integrated system, the components are configured as one piece or a single unit. They are more compact, easier to install, and are the ideal solution for smaller households.
